A divided island, a divided people. When in the modern world we talk about Ireland, do we mean Dublin, as well as the so-called Northern Ireland? And what if the fact that the island remains split between two states, two identities and two political traditions is the legacy of one of the world’s biggest empires?
Traces the road from the Plantation system and Penal Laws through the Ulster Crisis, Easter 1916, and the 1920 Government of Ireland Act. Sets the partition of Ireland alongside India to argue that imperial partition followed a recognisable pattern.

The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 gave the world fifteen newly independent states, each of which claimed sovereignty on the basis of national identity. But where did these nations come from? To a significant extent, they were created by the very state whose collapse they celebrated.
Argues that statehood on the imperial periphery was neither top-down nor spontaneous, but a negotiation between imperial authorities and local intellectuals, shaped by tsarist categories that the early Soviet state then inherited and reworked.

When sixteen young Germans were asked to sort fifty statements about peace, five distinct positions emerged: idealistic realists, egalitarian humanists, domestic realists, and others. Each held a different relationship to past, present, and future.
A Q-methodology study presented at the Berlin University Alliance Conference. Q-methodology is a mixed-methods technique for surfacing the structure of subjectivity, useful when the question is not “what is true” but “what positions exist.”
